When people ask if the United States is mentioned in Scripture, I like Rabbi Jerry’s answer: yes – in Romans, chapter one.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth… For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools… And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them Romans (1:18, 21-22, 28-32).
I always believed the United States led the world in the number of babies murdered each year by abortion. Turns out I was wrong. In fact, the country with by far the highest numbers of abortions per year is China – a country dominated by godless atheism. China’s 36-year long, government enforced, one-child policy, compounded by the horrible cultural view that girls are less valuable than boys, led to over 300 million abortions.
But the United States isn’t much better.
When our nation began turning away from God and rejecting the truths of Scripture, legalized abortion was all but inevitable. Godlessness became enshrined in law when it was decided that teaching the Bible in public schools was ‘unconstitutional’ but that killing a baby in her mother’s womb was constitutional.
Ours isn’t just a post-Christian culture; we are now a post-truth culture. Most people believe that truth is purely subjective.[1] So, it shouldn’t surprise us, that despite the Dobbs decision of 2022, which overturned Roe v. Wade, still every day almost 3,000 babies are murdered in the most gruesome ways in America.
Don’t get me wrong, I am very, very glad that Roe v. Wade was overturned. But change in law isn’t enough. Even if we were to outlaw abortion entirely, and punish the so-called doctors who make a huge profit from it, the horrific practice would continue.
What is needed is much more than a change in law. What is needed is a change in the hearts, souls, and minds of human beings. And not a minor change; we need transformation, a complete overhaul, a rescue and release from our collective bondage to sin and death. In other words, we need to be saved!
Humanity is dead in sin, and needs, not a band aid or antibiotic, but regeneration! And there is only one way for anyone to be spiritually made alive, reconciled to God, forgiven and transformed, and that is through Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah.
I’m not suggesting we don’t act to change the law; good law constrains sin, and we should pursue it. But if we really want to see an end to the killing of preborn babies, then human beings have to first be remedied of sin and our need for salvation. A changed heart leads to a changed mind, and a changed mind leads to a changed order. Do you agree?
I’m so glad you agree, because you have an assignment.
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? (Romans 10:13-14)
Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah, is the cure for sin, and the only Source of salvation. You and I are the custodians and agents of that vital information. It isn’t to be kept to ourselves, as though we’re ashamed; nor hoarded as though we don’t want anyone else to benefit from it. We should be bold, and we should be generous with what we know.
If you will be obedient to carry out your God-given assignment to tell people the Gospel, other wonderful things will happen in addition to salvation. Changed hearts lead to changed lives, and collectively speaking, changed lives lead to a changed society. Imagine a radically transformed society, where there’s zero demand for pornography, marriage is honored, women are respected, and not used, a society where life is cherished.
Fulfill your calling.
