Ten Reasons Why The Bible Is The Divinely Inspired Word Of God

This message is based on an article by Mike Gendron, founder of Proclaiming The Gospel Ministries.

  1. The Bible Claims To Be Divinely Inspired

The Bible is one of the few religious books that claims to be the divinely inspired Word of God. The phrases, “Thus says the Lord” and “the Word of the Lord” are used hundreds of times. The Son of God declared: God’s word is truth (John 17). In 2 Timothy the claim is made: All Scripture is inspired by God. If the Bible was the divinely inspired Word of God, one would think that it would claim to be so – and it does.

  1. The Bible Is Unique In Its Unity

Over a period of 1600 years, God used 40 almost exclusively Jewish men from all walks of life and living on three continents to write the 66 books of the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, they cohesively reveal God’s redemption of man from eternity past to eternity future. They deal with many complex topics – and are all in agreement. Think how incredible that is. It’s hard to get two or three people in the same room to agree on several important ideas, yet here you have 40 men separated by 1600 years and three continents agreeing about dozens of the most important ideas.

  1. The Bible’s Popularity And Influence

If it were the divinely inspired Word of God, you would think that the Bible would make an impact on the world. And it has. The Bible has been read and studied and quoted by more people than any other book. No other book has impacted civilization or changed so many lives as has the Bible. This is evidence that it is the divinely inspired Word of God.

  1. The Bible’s Indestructibility

The Son of God stated that because the Word of God was divinely inspired, not even the smallest part of one Hebrew letter would pass away from it until all is accomplished (Matthew 5:18). And He said Scripture can’t be broken (John 10). And that’s what has happened. The Bible has withstood intense scrutiny by skeptics and survived continuous attacks. Some claim that the text of the Bible has been corrupted over the centuries, but it’s not true. The Hebrew Scriptures have been meticulously transmitted, as the Dead Sea Scrolls demonstrate. When it comes to the New Testament, thousands of New Testament documents, some of them written in the first and second centuries, show that the text of the New Testament has been faithfully transmitted. The Bible’s indestructibility is evidence that it is the Word of God.

  1. The Bible Has A Unique Message Of Salvation

It teaches that humanity has been so damaged by joining the rebellion of the fallen angels and so affected by the forces of sin and death that salvation can only be attained as a free gift of God’s grace through our coming to know the Messiah and transferring our loyalties to the Three-in-One God. All other religious books teach that human beings must earn salvation through religious rituals or their own efforts. No other religion offers salvation by God’s grace through faith based on the death of the Son of God. The message of the Bible is unique – and this is what we would expect if it was the revelation of God.

  1. The Bible Is Painfully Honest

In most other books with claims to ultimate truth, the heroes are praised for their accomplishments, and their failures and sins are covered up. Not the Bible. The Bible is painfully honest about the lives of the people involved, which is another indication that the Bible is truthful and divinely inspired.

  1. Historical And Geographical Accuracy

Archeologists continue to find evidence of ancient peoples, places and cultures that are all described in the Bible. The descriptions have always proven to be completely reliable and accurate. Here’s one example: The Bible mentioned the Hittites, yet for many centuries there was no evidence of their existence. Was the Bible wrong? No. Archeological evidence of the Hittite kingdom was finally discovered in the late 1800s.

  1. Scientific Accuracy

While not a textbook on science, the Bible reflects accurate scientific knowledge of the universe. Scientific truths recorded in the Bible were not discovered until modern times using advances in science and technology. Some examples: The universe is not eternal. It had a beginning (Genesis 1). The Earth is round (Isaiah 40:22). The Earth is suspended in space without support (Job 26:7). The stars are countless (Genesis 15:15). The existence of sea currents (Psalm 8:8) and the water cycle (Ecclesiastes 1:7). The Bible reflects accurate scientific knowledge – which is not surprising since the God who created the universe inspired the writers of the Bible to record these scientific truths.

  1. The Bible Describes Reality Better Than Any Other Religion, Philosophy, Ideology Or Worldview

It tells us why the universe has laws, design, order, complexity, simplicity, elegance, symmetry and beauty – because there is a great and wise and powerful Designer. It tells us why there is love, wisdom, justice, truth and personality. These are not the results of chance processes and random activity. They come from God who has these attributes. The Bible tells us why there is evil, suffering, death and injustice. It’s due to humanity joining the rebellion of the fallen angels and the alienation from God and the corruption of human nature that resulted. It tells us the way of salvation, and that life can be meaningful, full of purpose and eternal significance. The Bible has a worldview that fits the facts, that lines up with reality and with human nature and gives us hope and happiness. The Bible describes reality better than any other philosophy, ideology, religion or worldview and it works – because it’s true.

  1. Bible Prophecy

The Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God because of its unique ability to tell the future. The Bible is the only religious book that accurately predicts the future – years, even centuries in advance. The Bible contains hundreds of detailed prophecies that predicted specific details about individuals, cities and nations – particularly the nation of Israel, and most particularly about the Messiah. Fulfilled prophecy is clear evidence that the Bible was inspired by God who is beyond time and knows and controls all things.

The Bible is unique. True. Accurate. Reliable. Trustworthy. Divinely inspired.

Read it. Study it. Trust it. Believe it. Love it. Build your life on it. You will have success in this life followed by eternal life in the world to come.
